World Champion Gabriella Ringblom returns on May 6

Reigning IMMAF World and Africa Open champion Gabriella Ringblom (pictured above) returns to action at BCMMA 19 in Colchester, UK, on May 6. The 30-year-old Swedish amateur standout and former pound-for-pound no.1 has been out of action since last competing at the 2016 European Open final last November in Prague, Czech Republic.

On November 27, 2016, Hungary’s Alexandra Kovacs produced a stunning upset when she snatched a TKO victory over Ringblom in the final of the Women’s 125lb Flyweight bracket at the 2016 European Open Championships. Kovacs went on to retain the title this year in Sofia, Bulgaria, however Ringlom was forced postpone her return to competition, and a huge potential rematch with Kovacs, due to injury and thus slipped to the no.3 position in IMMAF’s official pound-for-pound rankings, however she remains the world’s top ranked Women’s Flyweight competitor.

At BCMMA 19 on May 6 the well rounded Ringblom (22-9), who has shown the ability to shut out opponents as both a boxer and wrestler, will make her eagerly awaited return to action against undefeated British prospect Cory McKenna (6-0).

The young McKenna has shown durability and diverse skills since making her amateur debut in 2014 with experience in going the distance alongside a trio of submission wins and one TKO. This will not be the first time that McKenna has stepped up to face world champion level competition, as an amateur kickboxer in 2015 she mixed it up with towering Muay Thai sensation Dakota Ditcheva. In addition, McKenna last year submitted Poland’s Aleksandra Rola who was awarded the silver medal in the Women’s 115lb Strawweight division of the 2016 IMMAF World Championships, but was subsequently stripped of second place due to testing positive for performance enhancing substances.
