World Championships Day 1 Press Conference: Best Athlete Awards Announced

IMMAF Best Athletes awards were announced at last night’s IMMAF World Championships press conference at the close of Day 1.

IMMAF CEO Densign White spoke of the launch of the two accolades which will be awarded to the best male and best female athletes as determined by IMMAF, based on performance throughout competition week and most stylish finishes. The awards are in addition to the SAFEJAWZ Golden Mouthguard Award for good sportsmanship.

Also speaking at the press conference were Mohammed Al Tattan of HHSK Media, Head Official Marc Goddard, team UK athlete Christian Duncan and Colombian Team Leader Jaime Barón Cuervo. Densign White cited Team Kazakhstan as the most outstanding team in terms of overall performance on Day 1. The athletes spoke of their positive experience of the IMMAF World Championships platform.

Marc Goddard detailed the training that IMMAF officials undergo, stating that all the officials working at the IMMAF World Championships are IMMAF licensed

The first day of competition saw 79 amateur MMA matches in total with no serious injuries. 58 athletes were treated for minor injuries at the onsite clinic at the Khalifa Sports City Arena. 14 were referred to hospital, with 8 treated and discharged at 2 hours following end of competition. A remaining were under treatment at the time of the press conference, and reported to be stable.
